Member Spotlight – Tomi Abbas

Our member spotlight this week features Ms. Tomi Abbas. Tomi serves as a membership assistant at the Institute of Directors, Nigeria. She is also passionate about tech and diving into tech is one of the most adventurous things she has done, as you would read in this interview. Enjoy this conversation we had with her. 😉

aha! Trybe: How long have you been a member of aha! Trybe?

Tomi: I’ve been a member of the aha! Trybe since January of this year.

aha! Trybe: Why did you join the Trybe?

Tomi: I joined the trybe because of the affordability of the health plan. Also because I’ve been hearing about it from my family members – how easy it is to access medical care and all the other benefits of being in the community.

aha! Trybe: How would you describe your experience with us so far?

Tomi: My experience with aha! Trybe has been really amazing. It has been so easy to access healthcare and health education. I’ve learnt a couple of things about my health and even about life in general. I also love how it is not just about health but there is also useful information to help build the mind and help one generally in life. I love it so much.

aha! Trybe: What do you like most about the trybe?

Tomi: I love the community feeling and how everyone is carried along. Everyone is treated with respect. I also love the responsiveness of the trybe. There’s always someone to respond and it doesn’t always even have to be one of the Admins. There’s always someone online willing to help and assist. It’s like a family here.

aha! Trybe: Tell us a nickname you presently have or have had in the past and how it came about.

Tomi: Tomato 😂😂. That was my nickname in secondary school. So my name is Tomi and during my secondary school days, they called me Tomi Tomato, Tomi Tomato. I even had to customize it on our secondary school exercise track – Tomi Tomato.

aha! Trybe: What did you want to become when you were a child?

Tomi: I wanted to become a banker! 😁😁 When I was young, I used to follow my mum to the bank, and my dad. And I used to see all these bank managers and bankers. They will wear short skirts with their heels and really talk funny and phonetically. I loved it so much that I wanted to be a banker too.

aha! Trybe: What is your current occupation?

Tomi: Right now, I’m serving at the Institute of Directors, Nigeria as a membership assistant and I’m also diving into tech.

aha! Trybe: What do you love most about your job?

Tomi: I love relating with members of the institute. I love how I communicate with them and assist them if they have any issues. They don’t see me as young person. They relate with me well and respect me as their own. I love the fact that I solve their problems. It is really fulfilling for me and I also love the fact that I use computers a lot.

aha! Trybe: Can you tell us 3 most important rules you live by?

Tomi: 1. You are human first, before any other thing. So everyday, try to be more human. 2. Giving is key. Never stop giving, as much as you can. 3. You never know until you try. So risk it all and do not lose to fear.

aha! Trybe: Does success, for you, depend on having a university degree?

Tomi: No. But it’s a very good thing to have a university degree. It’s very good to have that educational background. It helps with your mental intelligence. But success does not depend on having a university degree.

aha! Trybe: What is your idea of good music?

Tomi: Anything that soothes my soul at any moment. I don’t have a particular genre.

aha! Trybe: What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve done?

Tomi: The most adventurous thing I have done was taking the decision to dive into tech because I did not expect myself to be in tech. Then also, against my mum’s will, I left the house and travelled down to Lagos from Ibadan to see my boyfriend in 2019. (PS: I won’t advise anyone to do this 😁😁). These are the most adventurous things I’ve done 😂😂.

aha! Trybe: Do you feel like there are double standards when it comes to rules for men and women?

Tomi: Yes. I feel there are. Most especially on the women part. But I love to state the fact that the rules are evolving and women are now breaking the limits to societal rules that have held them back.

aha! Trybe: What advice would you like to share with members of the community?

Tomi: Some of us (including me) are not still engaging the posts on the trybe. I feel everyone of us should engage more in the community and contribute to what the community is doing. I will also do better to engage more. We should also spread the word of aha! Trybe cos it is a wonderful place to be.

aha! Trybe: Do you have a business you would like us to patronise?

Tomi: Yes! But it is on hold right now cos I’ve not been able to manage my 9 to 5 job plus tech and running the business. My business on Instagram is @_nofrillsluxury_
I sell clothes, affordable corporate wears, and lovely affordable jewellery that do no tarnish. They are stainless steel. You can follow us via this link

aha! Trybe: Anything else you would like to share with us?
